Modeling Chisholm’s Logic of Obligation, Requirement, and Defeat

چکیده
It is well known that Standard Deontic Logic (SDL) suffers from a number of troubling paradoxes. Despite many years of efforts to resolve the paradoxes, there is no consensus that such efforts have been successful, and indeed [Hansen, 2006] argues that the paradoxes are “alive and kicking.” These continued difficulties with SDL motivate careful study of nonstandard deontic logics, such as Chisholm’s Ethics of Requirement (EOR) [Chisholm, 1964]. This paper investigates the foundations of Chisholm’s deontic logic as an alternative to standard deontic logic. Over the course of his career, Chisholm articulated a set of axioms for a deontic logic, and he gestured toward its connection with his work with Sosa on a logic of preference as given in [Chisholm and Sosa, 1966]. Although Chisholm’s work discussed the motivations and applications of his axioms, he never provided a model for them. This paper’s chief aim is to construct a model for Chisholm’s deontic logic defined in terms of the Chisholm-Sosa preference logic. This is done by combining techniques from modal logic and social choice theory. Since Chisholm’s system is less familiar today than standard deontic logic, the paper begins with a thorough reconstruction of his axiomatization. Finally, having shown that Chisholm’s logic is a viable alternative to standard deontic logic, this paper shows that his system evades Chisholm’s paradox in a novel way.

Chisholm's Paradox and Conditional Oughts
Since it was presented in 1963, Chisholm’s paradox has attracted constant attention in the deontic logic literature, but without the emergence of any definitive solution. We claim this is due to its having no single solution. The paradox actually presents many challenges to the formalization of deontic statements, including (1) context sensitivity of unconditional oughts, (2) formalizing condit...
متن کاملNorms as ascriptions of violations: An analysis in modal logic
The paper proposes a formal analysis of a theory of norms resulting from pulling together Anderson’s reduction, the analysis of counts-as, and a novel approach to the formal representation of language granularity in modal logic. We refer to such theory as the ascriptive view of norms. Concretely, the paper proposes a new formal definition of counts-as statements which is used as a basis for a n...
متن کاملDefeasible Deontic Reasoning
This paper combines a system of deontic logic with a system for default reasoning to analyze a notorious philosophical problem: Chisholm’s Paradox. The basic approach is to write deontic rules with explicit exceptions, but we also consider the extent to which a set of implicit exceptions can be derived from the underlying deontic semantics.
متن کاملModeling Directed Obligations and Permissions in Trade Contracts
In this paper we present definitions for directed obligation and permission in trade procedures and contracts. These definitions are based on deontic logic and action logic. The aim of these definitions is to give better models of directed obligation and permission that enables better modeling of procedures and contracts in (electronic) commerce. We show that these definitions can be used to giv...
متن کاملAn Ontology of Data Modeling Languages: A Study Using a Common-Sense Realistic Ontology
Data modelling languages are used in today’s information systems engineering environments. Many have a degree of hype surrounding their quality and applicability with narrow and specific justification often given in support of one over another. We want to more deeply understand the fundamental nature of data modelling languages. We thus propose a theory, based on ontology, that should allow us ...
